This is nuts-and-bolts escapism, a show that colors its characters just enough to deliver the rollercoaster thrills of a high concept premise, and cleverly written to ensure a satisfactory conclusion to its narrative crisis.

The limited series thriller stars Idris Elba as a mediator who finds his skills put to the test when his Dubai to London flight is taken over by armed gunmen, and is refreshingly frank about its goals. Platonic, with its screwball and sometimes cliched comedy, works best as a character study of two people who just get one another, major flaws and all. To the show’s credit, it succeeds in making you want to know the answers to those questions, and more. The push and pull between Sylvia and Will is written in such a way that even when they screw up so colossally with their partners, their work, or their social circles, you’re compelled to know where it’s all gonna end up. Long story short, they do, and quickly become one another’s emotional crutches and chaos instigators. It’s only when Sylvia finds out via social media that Will is recently divorced that her husband, Charlie (Luke Macfarlane), suggests she take the opportunity to reconnect and mend fences. He did anyway and they went radio silent with one another. They have reunited Byrne and Rogen once more to play Sylvia and Will, former college besties who five years ago parted on terrible terms when she warned him against marrying his fiancée, Audrey (Alisha Wainwright). Both were directed by Nicholas Stoller, who has co-created Platonic with his wife, Francesca Delbanco. You might remember that Byrne and Rogen played old marrieds in Neighbors and its sequel. And for Apple TV+’s low monthly fee (currently $6.99), it’s worth jumping in for the very best shows, including the aforementioned break-out juggernaut Ted Lasso, the murder mystery The Afterparty, and the sci-fi thriller Severance.īelow, we’ve ranked 30 notable originals, minus the documentaries and more kid-oriented programming (like Helpsters and Ghostwriter, which we weren’t thrilled with anyway), but we did keep Snoopy because Snoopy is a national treasure and his series on Apple TV+ are genuinely very good. They’re not all great, but at this rate, we’ll soon be able to forget The Mosquito Coast ever existed.

The early criticism that plagued a lot of its shows-that for all of their beauty, they didn’t have a lot of substance-is giving way to praise for series with compelling narratives. That’s risky at a time when many viewers are interested in rewatching old favorites.īut Apple TV+’s library is steadily growing, and the streaming service even has an Emmy-winning comedy ( Ted Lasso) under its belt. Everything it produced or co-produced for its new streaming service was and is fresh. At launch, it had a Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Anniston prestige-bait drama ( The Morning Show), a Jason Momoa-led sci-fi epic ( See), a comedy about Emily Dickinson ( Dickinson), and a dream. On the other hand, Apple TV+ didn’t have much of a library.

On the positive side, it had brand recognition and could easily offer its service for free to those who bought new Apple devices (a deal that is, as far as we know, still going on). So, when it launched in 2019, it did so with a major advantage and a major disadvantage. Because, despite not dominating the streaming market like its peers, Apple TV+ has one of the world’s biggest tech giants as its foundation, and with no existing IP already tethered to their service, a seemingly unlimited world of creativity to break into. In comparison to its competition in the streaming wars, Apple TV+ somehow manages to be both an underrated gem and a big fish in a little pond.
